First I had to listen to three hours of ranting by my otherwise brilliant local talk guy, Barry Young, whom you can hear on KFYI.com, and now Limbaugh is on about the injustice of half, HALF of the people not having to pay income taxes, and I've had it.
I called Barry and I couldn't get through, but I'm under no illusion that I'd have gotten through even if I got through if you know what I mean. Because he was just insane this morning as he jumbled, joined and equated those who don't pay taxes with those who are mooching off the system as if the poor pull the strings of the political elite.
So I'd like to clarify a couple of things, and the first is that any relation between those who pay no taxes and those who live off government largesse is coincidental.
Another is the perception that there's something wrong with the half who pay no income taxes. Under the first income tax laws, far more than half paid no income tax. So people who pay income taxes today have a case of misdirected anger. If it's a fact that less and less people are paying income taxes, that's a good thing, and the cure for middle class people who still pay taxes is NOT a national sales tax, under which the rich would likely benefit the most.
The cure is less spending.
Rush Limbaugh just got done telling a guy whose income is forty grand and who pays no income taxes, that he was angry that he, Limbaugh, does pay taxes. That sure made be feel sympathetic to El Rushbo..
Does it seem as if class envy works both ways?
