I had argued for years that George Bush is the worst President there will ever be.
Then when Obama came along, I had to admit I was wrong.
But how could I know that from beyond the grave of his Presidency, Bush would reach up and reclaim his ignominious title?
What made Bush so terrible is that he was the quintessential example of the maxim, "All that needs to happen for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing."
Now I would vociferously argue against the idea that Bush is one of the good people for the very reason that to see the evil that you and others will be responsible for and still do nothing, makes you, de facto, evil yourself.
But Bush, the person, no longer matters. His failings have already transformed this country, and with the long-rotten Arlen Specter switching parties today, the cap is now completely off the bottle that had contained the damage Bush had done.
Now Bush is actively and directly responsible because he supported Specter for re-election when Specter's conservative Republican challenger would almost certainly have unseated Specter and ended his career.
Now Specter will be front and center as the Democrats pass anything they want – and everything they want. There are no longer any stops, and George Bush made it all possible, not by doing nothing, but by supporting Specter.
As the local talk show lady just said, the worst thing about all this is that the Democrats can pretend to debate for as long as they want. They can appear to be listening to the other side, but in the end, there is no check on what they will do.
And what they will do will be disastrous to conservative positions and the country itself, and much of it, as we see with the New Deal programs and ideology, will never be undone.
This is the new Bush legacy. And most conservatives not only stood by and let it happen, they defended the guy who did them and the country in. Instead of holding Bush accountable when the damage was minimal, they defended his every failure as each built on the last until – we got ourselves an Obama… and now, a 100 (filibuster) proof Obama!
Now, by all means, enjoy your tea parties.
